Barcelona have made significant progress in their pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Rodri, who was previously linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer.
Former Spanish striker Fernando Morientes believes Real Madrid never really wanted Rodri, the Ballon d’Or winner with Manchester City.
“It seems like a very stupid joke to me,” Morientes told the Spanish newspaper Sport.
“Those of us who know what’s going on know that Real Madrid never really wanted Rodri at any point.”

Morientes also questioned reports that Rodri preferred Barcelona over Real Madrid: “They’re treating us like fools when they say Rodri rejected Real Madrid.”
Morientes believes the story is now being presented in a way that absolves Real Madrid of responsibility: “They’re now throwing the ball into the player’s court, claiming he wanted to join Barcelona.”
Morientes concluded regarding Florentino Pérez: “If Florentino Pérez had wanted him, this deal wouldn’t have fallen through.”
It’s worth noting that Rodri won the 2026 World Cup with the Spanish national team after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final.
